Oft-Overlooked Lipid Marker

 Does your physician pay attention to triglycerides?

While it seems LDL is all physicians talk about when it comes to evaluating your lipid panel for cardiac risk, triglycerides are just as important. The inflammatory marker C-reactive protein (CRP), which we have discussed at length, is the most important, but physicians are starting to take CRP more seriously.

When we see high triglycerides, it is concurrent with symptoms creating major ramifications on one's health. High triglycerides are commonly linked to two lifestyle choices:
  1. Excess consumption of refined sugar or grain carbohydrates.
  2. Consumption of incompatible grain carbohydrates.
Of course, excess carbohydrate consumption or malabsorption can lead to blood sugar imbalances, which leads to imbalances for just about every organ system.

Most physicians consider 150 to 199 borderline and over 200 out of range. We think this is too generous. For optimal health, we consider between 70 to 115 optimal.

Luckily, triglycerides are one of the easiest blood markers to adjust. Eating compatible carbs and/or curtailing excess consumption, along with taking supplemental fish oil, can dramatically bring down triglycerides.

Don't let your physician convince you to take a statin for high triglycerides. A study in the March issue of Endocrine Practice found that high dose fish oil prophylaxis is all you need to lower triglycerides.  

Even more than just seeing your levels drop, the amelioration of symptoms can be even more dramatic.
