Gene Info = Better Health
Bonnie and Steve: Giving personal genomic information to individuals can have a major, long-term effect on their lifestyle. Authors of the Finnish GeneRISK study presented their findings at last week's European Society of Human Genetics annual conference.

Providing information on the risk of cardiovascular disease based on their genome and traditional risk factors to 7,328 people inspired changes for the better in areas such as body mass reduction and smoking cessation.

Nearly 90% of them said the information had made them take better care of their health! In what other capacity of health services could you get this kind of compliance?

While we know that genomic factors have an important impact on the risk of common diseases, to date there has been little known about the use of this information in prevention.

GeneRISK participants will be recalled for follow-up studies over the next 20 years and their health status will be closely followed. The researchers believe that those who have already made lifestyle changes are likely to continue them.

This is so exciting to us as our Pure Genomics has, and will continue to be, an integral part of our services.

Stay tuned as we will be releasing results of our own clinical research on Pure Genomics in the near future!
Chiropractic Case Studies

Oh What a Relief!
Studies show Essential Oils are effective in reducing pain. One study showed that a blend of lavender, rosemary, and peppermint oils helped reduce pain by around 30% in people with chronic shoulder pain. Another study found that using black pepper, marjoram, lavender and peppermint essential oils helped relieve neck pain when massaged daily to the painful area.

Does this tempt you to consider adding Essential Oils to your medicine cabinet? I have them readily available in my office and mix them with Epsom Salt lotion before applying onto the spine of my patients as part of their Chiropractic Adjustment. My intent is to decrease pain and enhance relaxation for Better outcomes. At home you can add the essential oils to lotion, jojoba oil, coconut oil, sweet almond oil, avocado oil, olive oil, Magnesium oil or any oil you like.

Don't put the oils directly onto your skin because they are highly concentrated and you don't want to have a negative reaction. Therapeutic results occur through breathing in the scent of the oils, which have a direct effect on your brain and applying them onto the skin. Within 5 minutes they are absorbed into your blood stream, by 20 minutes they are absorbed fully and by 90 minutes the body has used them up. This is why you may need to apply them 3 or more times a day if you are in a lot of pain or have a chronic condition. Once the desired effect has occurred you can use them once a day or only as needed.

For those of you who are curious about what researchers have found about Essential Oils, here are some results. Lavender essential oil has pain-relieving properties similar to a popular pharmaceutical drug prescribed for reducing arthritis inflammation. Clary sage can help to relieve muscle cramps and ease tension. Because it also controls sebum levels on the skin, it is a great essential oil if you also suffer from acne.

Chamomile extracts help to inhibit neurotransmitter signals that are connected with pain perception and help to relax blood vessels. Other studies have pointed to the effectiveness of using chamomile extracts to treat chronic rheumatic pain and back pain. Eucalyptus essential oil can ease the muscle pain of rheumatoid arthritis and chronic muscle aches. You can also use eucalyptus to get rid of other types of pain like headaches, treat respiratory infections naturally, and get relief from joint aches. Thyme extracts contain enzymes that act as COX-2 inhibitors to help suppress pain perception and reduce muscle inflammation. The natural analgesic properties of thyme help get rid of muscle pain without causing side effects like some NSAIDs do.

There are many more oils that have been studied and the results are easily found online. This way you have plenty of choices on what to use for your pain and other health concerns.

NOTE: For those with food or environmental allergies, Essential Oils can create reactions or exacerbate allergic symptoms. In these individuals, please contact your allergist first.
