DID YOU KNOW that in a recent study in Diabetes Care, 40-50% of participants had inadequate magnesium intake? After incremental supplementation, the risk of type 2 diabetes was reduced by 4% with each additional 50 mg per day of magnesium.

Supplemental magnesium intake during chemotherapy was significantly associated with lower prevalence of Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN), a common and severe side-effect in colorectal cancer patients. Furthermore, the Nutrients study found higher intake of magnesium during and after chemotherapy was associated with less severe CIPN.

Is Sitting the New Smoking?
Bonnie and Steve: "Sitting is the new smoking" has become a catch-phrase in the wellness lexicon. Whether most of us believe it is anyone's guess.
 
What we can tell you is that if you sit all day and do not move around, especially in middle age, you are at higher risk for brain atrophy, new research from PLOS Oneshows.

Using MRI, investigators found sedentary behavior is a significant predictor of medial temporal lobe (MTL) thinning and its substructures and that physical activity, even at high levels, does not offset the harmful effects of sitting for extended periods. The brain effect of sitting affects a critical memory center of the brain.

Our hope is that these findings inspire healthy brain habits, at home and work.

We vociferously urge you to adhere to one, or preferably all, of these daily lifestyle pearls to keep you from sitting for prolonged periods of time.
  • Stand up every 20 minutes, minimum. Walk around, stand in place, or do whatever you need to do for a few minutes to loosen up the synovial fluid in your joints and get your blood flowing.
     
  • Incorporate Exercise Snacks into your schedule up to three times daily.
     
  • Exercise a minimum of 30 minutes daily, five days per week (as low impact as walking or Tai Chi, to more rigorous running or HIIT).
For the binge watchers out there, stand up for at least half of each episode of the show you're binging!
