Ice Cream Made From Frozen Bananas 

Use three very ripe bananas. Make sure they have at least a few little brown spots on the peel, since the more brown on the peel, the more ripe they are.

  

Peel the bananas and cut them into 1-inch pieces. Put them in an air-tight container, pop them in the freezer and leave them overnight until they are frozen solid. Keep a stash of frozen banana slices in the freezer for any time a sweet frozen treat is needed.

 

When the banana slices are frozen solid, break the pieces apart with your hands or a spoon and put them in a blender or a food processor. Blend until totally creamy, about 2-3 minutes. You'll have to stop the blender every so often to push down some pieces and make sure everything is getting blended evenly.

  

It makes about three 2-scoop servings. Enjoy right then, or place it in an air-tight container in the freezer to harden up a bit more before scooping into bowls or cones. Here are a few recommended variations:

  

Pineapple and Macadamia Nuts

Top with a few chunks of freshly sliced pineapple and chopped macadamia nuts.

  

Strawberry Chocolate Chip

Add 1 cup frozen chopped strawberries to the blender. When blended, stir in 1/2 cup dark chocolate chips (or carob chips, or cacao nibs).

  

Cherries and Dark Chocolate

Top with a couple spoonfuls of canned cherries and a sprinkling of chocolate chips or cacao nibs.

  

Cinnamon Sunbutter

Add 2 Tablespoons sunflower seed butter and 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon to the blender.

  

Cinnamon Pecan

Add 1 cup chopped pecans and 1 teaspoon cinnamon to the blender.

  

Mango Peach

Add 1/2 cup frozen chopped mango and 1/2 cup frozen chopped peach to the blender.

  

Raspberry Almond

Add 1 cup frozen raspberries to the blender. When blended, stir in 1/2 cup chopped almonds.

  

Dark Chocolate Banana

Add 2 tablespoons of dark chocolate sauce to the blender.

  

Apple Pie

Simmer chopped apples with cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg. Let thicken and cool, then pour over ice cream scoops.

  

Strawberry Pistachio

Add 1 cup frozen chopped strawberries to the blender. When blended, stir in 1/2 cup chopped roasted, unsalted pistachios.

  

Blueberry Banana

Add 1 cup frozen wild blueberries to the blender. Top with a sprinkling of chopped walnuts or almonds.

Preventing Early Puberty in Girls

 

According to a recent study in Diabetes Care, of 15,000 girls who menstruated earliest (between the ages of 8 and 11) had a 70% greater risk of developing type 2 diabetes in adulthood than those who started at age 13.

 

What are two main causes of early puberty?

  1. Milk/Dairy (especially conventional) and sugar consumption, which enhances insulin like growth factor.
  2. Xenoestrogen exposure in the environment through plastics, pesticides, antibiotics, parabens, phthalates, and unfiltered water to name a few.  
Magnesium: Science, Economics Come Together
The National Institutes of Health lists magnesium as being necessary for more than 300 biochemical reactions in the body, from helping maintain normal muscle and nerve function, to keeping heart rhythm steady, supporting a healthy immune system, and keeping bones strong. The mineral is also needed for blood sugar management, and healthy blood pressure.

  

In Europe, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has issued positive opinions on magnesium and the maintenance of normal bone, teeth, and protein synthesis; the reduction of tiredness and fatigue; electrolyte balance; normal energy-yielding metabolism; neurotransmission, and muscle contraction.

 

The health benefits of magnesium appear to be matched by the potential economic benefits of magnesium supplementation.

  

A report by Frost & Sullivan found that taking magnesium supplements at preventive intake levels could reduce the risk of having an osteoporosis-related event by 6%, which equates to about 69,000 osteoporosis related medical events each year. The potential net savings after accounting for magnesium supplement costs from 2013-2020 could be $4.2 billion in the US alone.

  

The ultimate benefits of magnesium supplements could be many magnitudes greater, given that between 70 and 80% of the US population are not meeting their recommended intakes of magnesium.

Nuts and Berries: The Brain Team 

Steve: The inclusion of nuts in our diets is associated with a decreased risk of coronary artery disease, hypertension, gallstones, diabetes, cancer, metabolic syndrome, and visceral obesity. Not bad.

 

Frequent consumption of berries is associated with improved cardiovascular and cancer outcomes, improved immune function, and decreased recurrence of urinary tract infections. Pretty good. 

 

New research from the July issue of American Journal of Clinical Nutritiontouts that the consumption of nuts AND berries is associated with reduction in oxidative damage, inflammation, vascular reactivity, and platelet aggregation, and improvement in immune functions.

 

Growing evidence is showing that the synergy and interaction of all of the nutrients and other bioactive components in nuts and berries can have a beneficial effect, specifically on the brain and cognition.

 

The researchers pontificate that regular nut consumption, berry consumption, or both could be used as an adjunctive therapeutic strategy in the treatment and prevention of several neurodegenerative diseases and age-related brain dysfunction. That's awesome!

Non-Surgical, Non-Pharmacologic Ways to Slow Vericose Vein Progression
  • Keep it loose. Tight clothes that constrict your waist, groin or waist areas or put pressure on your leg veins can worsen varicose veins.
  • Keep your weight healthy. Extra weight places pressure on your veins.
  • Don't sit or stand too long without switching positions. Change position every 30 minutes to keep your blood moving.
  • Exercise. Any low-impact physical activity that encourages blood circulation without stressing leg veins, like walking and swimming, helps.
  • Elevate your legs while sitting or sleeping. Take 10 minute breaks to elevate your legs above the level of your heart.
  • Hang up the high heels. Your calf muscles get a better workout in flats or lower heels. That helps move blood through leg veins more efficiently.
  • Your doctor may also prescribe one of three strengths of compression stockings, which decrease swelling in the legs and prevent blood from pooling in leg veins.

Red Meat Cooking Practices

Steve: The first study to investigate the burden of disease estimate (colorectal, prostate, breast, and pancreatic cancers) attributed to red meat consumption using different cooking practices was presented in the April issue of Food and Chemical Toxicology.

  

The cooking practices were barbecuing/grilling, frying/broiling, and roasting/baking. Consumption of barbecued red meat was associated with the highest disease burden, followed by fried red meat and roasted red meat.

Sleep in Our Eyes: What Is It Made Of?

Bonnie: The crusty stuff is actually made up of a bunch of different materials, including discarded cells, mucus and debris (including bacteria, bits of oil from the eyelids, and dust), that are collected as the eyelids sweep across the eye.

 

Our eyelids close similarly to a zipper, from the cheek side toward the nose. When they do that, they push the tears across the eye, picking up all these different materials along the way. This discharge ultimately collects in the corner of the eyes or the lower lid, and a bit may also collect on the upper lid.

 

Think of it as using an exfoliant on your skin. You're cleaning off dead skin or any surface debris you don't want.
