Dear Valued Subscriber,

DID YOU KNOW that children who receive antibiotics before their first birthday are at increased risk for developing asthma?

The findings from the May issue of The Lancet suggest that it is impaired viral immunity and negative expression of genetic variants due to damaged chromosomes that increase the risk.

Use antibiotics only if it is explicitly necessary. Probiotics are a wonderful infection preventive for this age group.

Have a happy, healthy week. Bonnie and Steve Minsky

Advantame: a Wolf in Sheep's Clothing

The Food and Drug Administration announced the new food additive Advantame is safe for use as a general-purpose sweetener and flavor enhancer in food. Made by Ajinomoto, Advantame is the sixth high-intensity sweetener approved by the FDA.

What Ajinomoto has really done is slap a new coat of paint on a broken down jalopy.

Advantame is a combination of aspartame (commercially known as Nutrasweet) and vanillin. Vanillin is an artificial chemical used in place of natural vanilla for flavor. Vanillin is ubiquitous in our food supply because it is drastically cheaper than real vanilla flavor.

Ajinomoto is no dummy. Take an old sweetener that has a bad reputation, add a cheap artificial ingredient, give it a new name, and customers will lap it up!

Congrats Ajinomoto on your "innovation". Pardon us, but we will avoid Advantame like the plague and recommend our clients do the same.

For those of you who have not read our myriad posts about aspartame over the years, it is one of the worst chemicals one can ingest. Scores of clients have come to us with gastrointestinal and/or neurological issues related to consumption of food and beverages with the artificial sweetener.

You can understand our lack of excitement with Advantame's approval.
