NCI Well Connect
July 10, 2017
Dear Steve,

DID YOU KNOW that since the active ingredients of household pesticides are often the same as those used in agriculture, a recent study in the journal Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry says that if you use them in the home, which we do not suggest, apply the fewest treatments possible?

Extended exposure can be especially worrying for young children and household pets, who spend more time on the floor and are frequently picking up things and putting them in their mouths.

We have the greatest natural remedy for getting rid of pesky fruit flies. Put out a tiny glass pyrex bowl filled with a few ounces of brandy. Within a day or two, all the fruit flies will end up in the bowl because they can't resist the sweetness of the brandy!

Have a happy, healthy day! Steve and Bonnie

Is Low FODMAP Legit?

Bonnie and Steve: Low Fermentable Oligo-, Di- Monosaccharides, and Polyoles (FODMAP) has become the darling diet of gastroenterologists. Unfortunately, this, like many other philosophies gastroenterologists adhere to (reliance in PPIs for reflux, for instance), is misguided.

A new study in last month's Aliment Pharmacology Therapeutics blows a gaping hole into the low FODMAP theory.

The diet is a first-line treatment for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Experts refer to the diet as supported by high level of evidence, but an evaluation of the quality of trials is lacking.

FODMAPs are poorly absorbed in the small intestine and reach the colon undigested. They cause an osmotic increase of water content in the intestines and increased gas production due to bacterial fermentation

The researchers reviewed the quality of trials on the symptomatic effects of the low FODMAP diet for IBS. Most trials were randomized controlled trials with an extremely high risk of bias.

The diet has not been studied for more than six weeks and trials examining the effect of the important reintroduction period are non-existent. IBS is usually a chronic, sometimes life-long, condition with periods of remission and exacerbation. Therefore, treatment trial lengths of a few days or a few weeks are generally considered insufficient for long term treatments and a minimum length of 6 months has been recommended to establish long-term efficacy.

In addition, in most of the trials, the control group (those who did not remove the FODMAPs) improved symptomatically almost as much as the treatment groups.

The low FODMAP diet was also not superior to gut-directed hypnotherapy.

Here's the most damning line from the authors: "There is a risk that the symptomatic effects reported in the trials are driven primarily by a placebo response."

We think FODMAP can be beneficial in a very finite group of individuals suffering from IBS. We do not like it for any other gastrointestinal disorder.

Genetic Wellness Testing & Analysis
Cognition & Mental Health - All New!

Bonnie and Steve:It only takes a few simple steps to get individualized genetic nutritional support. Test your genome. We translate the results in a way you can understand. We target your individualized needs with nutritional support that can be easily implemented.

Pure Genomics helps the patient with:
  1. Reaffirmation for why existing patients should continue to adhere to their optimal diet and lifestyle. Genes are the deepest layer of individualization. When a patient is doing incredibly well despite horrible genetic deficiencies, it is a strong deterrent to fall off the wagon.
  2. Creates the last thrust of motivation for a patient who is having trouble adhering to their diet and lifestyle protocol.
  3. Provides incredible proof for prevention of family disease history. Connects the dots for many of our patients.
  4. Is a strong component for new patient screenings, especially for methylation, detoxification, antioxidant defense, weight management, metabolic health, memory and cognition, mental health, and essential fatty acid, vitamin A, and vitamin D absorption.

SPMs and Osteoarthritis
Bonnie: There is strong evidence for the role of SPMs (specialized pro-resolving mediators) in resolving inflammation of the joints that is the hallmark of Osteoarthritis (OA). Receptors for SPMs are present in joints' synovial fluid.

Furthermore, the underlying cause of inflammation present in OA could be the failure of pro-resolving mediators to activate in the joints. Researchers consistently find low SPM levels in OA and Rheumatoid Arthritis patients.

The symptoms of osteoarthritis can be managed with healthy lifestyle behaviors. Getting regular physical activity, maintaining a healthy weight, and eating an anti-inflammatory diet may slow the progression of the disease. It cannot be reversed, though, so the goal of treatment is typically pain relief and maintenance of function. Adding SPMs to a healthy lifestyle, including maintaining a healthy weight, may help to ameliorate the symptoms of OA.
