NCI Well Connect Mid-Week Brief
July 11, 2018
Dear Steve,

DID YOU KNOW that a World Health Organization resolution to encourage breast-feeding around the world was blocked by the United States?

In an effort to protect infant formula manufacturers, US delegates resorted to threatening poor countries with sanctions and withholding humanitarian and military aid.

It was Russia who ultimately stepped in to protect the measure, and then US delegates backed down.

Beyond shocking. You can read the detailed piece here.

DID YOU KNOW that we completed our first ever case control clinical study last week?

As many of you who have done our Pure Genomics genetics panel know, the FTO gene is the most well researched for overweight and obesity.

We confirmed that clients who are FTO homozygous, which means they have a double mutation, were significantly more overweight, obese, or morbidly obese than those who were FTO heterozygous (one mutation) or FTO wild (no mutation).

Why is this so significant? 40% of all cancers are related to obesity for starters. More importantly, FTO has been shown to be a tremendously malleable gene. When the proper individualized diet and lifestyle measures are implemented, an FTO homozygous client can achieve even greater success than those with one or no mutations!

With an NCI Well Connect Membership, you can have your FTO, and 23 other wellness-related genes, screened for free!

Have a happy, healthy day! Steve and Bonnie
The Power Couple: Vit D & Omega-3
Bonnie and Steve: We have often elucidated on the power vitamin D3 and omega-3 fatty acids wield. However, when taken together therapeutically, they can have a stronger effect, if that is possible.

A randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial in this month's The Journal of Nutritionexamined daily consumption of omega-3 fatty acids (2000mg EPA and DHA) and vitamin D3 supplementation (50,000IU every other week) for improving multiple sclerosis (MS) by correcting metabolic abnormalities and attenuating oxidative stress and inflammation over 12 weeks.

Patients taking the supplement combination showed a significant improvement in disability compared with placebo. C-reactive protein, plasma total antioxidant capacity, total glutathione, and malondialdehyde concentrations were significantly improved in the supplement group compared with the placebo group. In addition, those supplementing had a significant reduction in serum insulin, insulin resistance, and total/HDL-cholesterol ratio improvement.

And if that wasn't enough, a new study FASEB Journal found that vitamin D3 and omega-3 fatty acids work together to improve cognitive function and social behavior with particular relevance for battling ADHD, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

Co-author of the study, Dr. Bruce Ames from the Children's Hospital Oakland Research Institute, suggests that omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin D3 work together to maintain healthy levels of serotonin in the brain. Vitamin D regulates serotonin synthesis, EPA influences serotonin release, and DHA improves membrane embedded serotonin receptor accessibility.

We know this to be true because in our Pure Genomics panel, those with significant vitamin D genetic mutations often have serotonin issues, including Seasonal Affective Disorder.

Making sure your vitamin D level is optimal, as well as a balanced omega-6 to omega-3 ratio (2:1), can go a long way to achieving optimal health!
Gerolsteiner Alternative
Bonnie and Steve: We know that you love Gerolsteiner sparkling water. All of our family and staff love it too! However, there are some that do not care for Gerolsteiner, or find it cumbersome to purchase glass bottles.

We are delighted that Pure Encapsulations has launched Mineral2O, which is basically Gerolsteiner in "powder" form. Just add a tiny scoop to 8 oz. of water and that's it!

Here are some of the reasons why Mineral2O is so ideal:
  • It's portable. Much easier to bring with on vacations or to the gym. You can put a scoop into your water bottle and have an instant electrolyte water/mineral supplement.
  • Provides every essential electrolyte, but is very low in sodium. We get so much more sodium in our diets than all other electrolytes. You can add sea salt to your water if you need more sodium.
  • Perfect for athletes and those who exercise vigorously for before and after workouts/athletic events.
  • Better tolerated for those with absorption issues or chronic diarrhea.
  • When you have stomach flu or an intestinal virus that causes acute diarrhea, Mineral2O with a well tolerated sugar, such as maple syrup, could be awonderful alternative to the dehydration formulas that are loaded with corn and preservatives.
  • You could reduce your calcium and magnesium supplement intake. Consult with your health professional before doing so.
  • It's alkalizing. Along with calcium, magnesium, and chloride, Mineral2O contains 72 trace minerals, most of which are alkalizing.
