NCI Well Connect Mid-Week Brief
July 12, 2017
Dear Steve,

DID YOU KNOW that researchers in a recent study from Scientific Reports found that playing natural sounds affected the bodily systems that control the flight-or-fight and rest-digest autonomic nervous systems?

When listening to natural sounds, the brain connectivity reflected an outward-directed focus of attention. When listening to artificial sounds, the brain connectivity reflected an inward-directed focus of attention, similar to states observed in anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder and depression.

There was also an increase in rest-digest nervous system activity (associated with relaxation of the body) when listening to natural compared with artificial sounds.

If you do not live close to nature, there are nature sound machines you can purchase. Use as a form of meditation once or twice daily for 15 minutes at a time!

Have a happy, healthy day! Steve and Bonnie

Vitamin D3, Not D2, Is Key to Tackling Vitamin D Deficiency
Bonnie and Steve: Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is significantly more effective at raising vitamin D status than vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol), according to a study from the July 5th issue of American Journal for Clinical Nutrition.

Most allopathic doctors prescribe vitamin D2, while integrative health professionals usually recommend vitamin D3.

In the study, vitamin D3, which is derived from animal sources (lanolin), raised vitamin D levels twice as much as vitamin D2 (plant-based) after 12 weeks.

For those that think they are getting enough vitamin D through their doctor's prescription, vitamin D2-fortified foods, and plant sourced D2 should now concentrate on getting some of their daily value with vitamin D3.

Some countries have already switched over. For example, all vitamin D supplements and fortified foods in Australia are vitamin D3-based. And they do not need vitamin D half as much as those of us living in northern latitudes!

Current guidelines by the US National Institutes of Health, UK Department of Health, and various other government bodies state that vitamins D2 and D3 are equivalent and achieve the same effect. We have known this to be wrong for a while, but now that this research has come out, we hope changes will be made.
