NCI Well Connect Mid-Week Brief
July 25, 2018
Dear Steve,

DID YOU KNOW that contrary to popular belief across college campuses, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) medications fail to improve cognition in healthy students and actually can impair functioning, according to a study by researchers in last month's journal Pharmacy.

Researchers hypothesized that ADHD medication would enhance cognition in the healthy students, but instead, the medication did not improve reading comprehension or fluency, and it impaired working memory. Not only are they not benefiting from it academically, but it could be negatively affecting their performance.

This was the first-ever study of the impact of so-called "study drugs" on college students who do not have ADHD comes at a time when use of prescription stimulants is common among young adults who believe the drugs will improve their academic performance.

Have a happy, healthy day! Steve and Bonnie

HPV Preys on Vitamin Deficiency?
Bonnie and Steve: Here's another reason why you want to know if you or your family have genetic mutations for absorbing vitamin B12 and folate. A groundbreaking study in The Journal of Nutrition found that human papillomavirus (HPV) takes hold and is more pervasive when folate, and to a lesser degree, vitamin B12, are deficient.

While just done on mice now, if this research is reproduced in humans, it could be immensely significant for the prevention of HPV in young people.

Studies suggest independent linkages between poor folate and/or vitamin B-12 nutrition, genomic human papillomavirus (HPV) type 16 viral integration, and cancer. However, there was no direct evidence in vivo to support the causative role of poor folate nutrition in HPV integration into the cellular genome until now.

The results of this study confirmed that dietary folate deficiency can profoundly influence and modulate events leading to HPV-induced cancer, and allow genomic integration of HPV DNA into the cell.

Gerolsteiner Alternative
Bonnie and Steve: We know that you love Gerolsteiner sparkling water. All of our family and staff love it too! However, there are some that do not care for Gerolsteiner, or find it cumbersome to purchase glass bottles.

We are delighted that Pure Encapsulations has launched Mineral2O, which is basically Gerolsteiner in "powder" form. Just add a tiny scoop to 8 oz. of water and that's it!

Here are some of the reasons why Mineral2O is so ideal:
  • It's portable. Much easier to bring with on vacations or to the gym. You can put a scoop into your water bottle and have an instant electrolyte water/mineral supplement.
  • The downside of a reverse osmosis filter is it removes all minerals. Also, if you live in a location with soft water, there are few minerals. Mineral2O can replace many of these for you.
  • Provides every essential electrolyte, but is very low in sodium. We get so much more sodium in our diets than all other electrolytes. You can add sea salt to your water if you need more sodium.
  • Perfect for athletes and those who exercise vigorously for before and after workouts/athletic events.
  • Better tolerated for those with absorption issues or chronic diarrhea.
  • When you have stomach flu or an intestinal virus that causes acute diarrhea, Mineral2O with a well tolerated sugar, such as maple syrup, could be awonderful alternative to the dehydration formulas that are loaded with corn and preservatives.
  • You could reduce your calcium and magnesium supplement intake. Consult with your health professional before doing so.
  • It's alkalizing. Along with calcium, magnesium, and chloride, Mineral2O contains 72 trace minerals, most of which are alkalizing.
