Bone Mineral Magnific!

Bonnie and Steve:
Optimal magnesium intakes may boost bone health.

Increased intakes of magnesium can reduce the risk of fractures for older women, as well as older men, according to a new study in British Journal of Nutrition. This comes on the heels on another positive study about bones and magnesium as reported on an April issue.

3,765 older Americans with an average age of 60 indicated that the highest average intakes of magnesium were associated with a 53% and 62% lower risk of fracture for men and women, respectively, compared to those with the lowest average intakes.

Mounting evidence of the positive association between magnesium intake and bone mineral density, as well as data showing an association between magnesium intake and fracture risk, while not surprising, is very exciting for magnesium proponents like us!

The results add to an ever growing body of science supporting magnesium's benefits.

The National Institutes of Health lists magnesium as being necessary for more than 300 biochemical reactions in the body, from helping maintain normal muscle and nerve function, to keeping heart rhythm steady, to supporting a healthy immune system, for blood sugar management, healthy blood pressure, and positive genetic expression.

The highest average intakes of magnesium in the study were roughly 375 milligrams.
