NCI Well Connect: August 15, 2016
Dear Steve,

DID YOU KNOW that according to the CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, insufficient sleep is common among high school students and is associated with an increased risk for unintentional injury from drowsy driving crashes and other causes?

Students who reported sleeping equal to or less than 7 hours on school nights were more likely to report several injury-related risk behaviors (infrequent bicycle helmet use, infrequent seatbelt use, riding with a driver who had been drinking, drinking and driving, and texting while driving) compared with students who sleep 9 hours.

Have a happy, healthy day. Steve and Bonnie

Dealing With a Family History of Depression
Bonnie and Steve: In a study from last week's JAMA Psychiatry, offspring with two previous generations affected with major depression were at highest risk for major depression, suggesting the potential value of determining family history of depression in children and adolescents beyond two generations.

Yet another reason to test genes associated with nutrition. If genes associated with depression are detected early-on, there are numerous dietary and nutrient therapies that can help prevent genes' negative expression (i.e. increased inflammation).

For example, a study from last month's British Journal of Nutrition found that female subjects who adhered to healthy eating guidelines had a 49% lower risk of anxiety
and a 45% lower risk of depression, and healthy eaters aged 40 or younger were 58% less likely to suffer from anxiety and 51% less likely to suffer from depression.

In the same issue of British Journal of Nutrition, a 12-year study in middle-aged women found that those with the most antiinflammatory diet had a roughly 26% lower risk of developing depression compared to women with the most proinflammatory diet.
