Balance Your Fatty Acids
Bonnie and Steve: We cannot emphasize enough the importance of balancing your omega fatty acid intake. While we prefer a 1:1 ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids, it is virtually impossible to accomplish in our current dietary environment. We'll settle for 2:1 ratio.

Here's a few reasons for fatty acid balance vigilance.

Alzheimer's/Dementia
Higher dietary intake of the essential fatty acid docosahexaenoic (DHA) has been associated with better cognitive performance because DHA prevents amyloid deposition in the brain, according to a study from this month's JAMA Neurology

Retinopathy
Eating at least two weekly servings of oily fish, rich in omega-3 fatty acids, can help middle-aged and older people with type 2 diabetes reduce their risk for diabetic retinopathy. Diabetic retinopathy occurs when blood vessels in the eye are injured due to inability to control blood sugar.

According to a study in the August issue of JAMA Ophthalmology, participants who were 55 years or older and consumed at least 500 mg per day of omega-3 fatty acids showed a 48% reduced risk for incident diabetic retinopathy compared with those who consumed less than 500 mg per day. 

Colon Cancer
A new study from journal Gut found that a high dietary intake of omega-3 fatty acids, derived from oily fish, help to lower the risk of death from colon cancer in patients with the disease. Researchers believe the omega-3 fatty acids suppress tumor growth and curb blood supply to malignant cells.

Examining several thousand patients over a 40 year span showed that those with a higher dietary intake of omega 3 from oily fish were more likely to be physically active, take multivitamins, drink alcohol and to consume more vitamin D and fiber. They were also less likely to smoke, all factors associated with a lower risk of colon cancer.

In those with colon cancer, patients who consumed at least 300 mg of omega-3 daily had a 41% lower risk of dying from the disease compared with those who consumed less than 100 mg daily. The reduced risk applied to food sources and supplements.
