NCI Well Connect
August 6, 2018
Dear Steve,

DID YOU KNOW that ancestry.com and 23andMe.com just published a detailed document entitled "Privacy Best Practices for Consumer Genetic Testing Services"? For those of you still on the fence of about the privacy of your genetic information, this is worth a read.

HSA, FSA FOR SUPPLEMENTS AND SERVICES
Did you know that if you have an HSA or FSA debit/credit card, you can use it at Nutritional Concepts? While we cannot guarantee it because every account is different, we are able to process most HSA or FSA credit card transactions.

ADULTERATED, EXPIRED METAGENICS AND PURE ENCAPSULATIONS SUPPLEMENTS BOUGHT ON THE INTERNET
Metagenics sent a memo alerting us of a problem customers have had purchasing counterfeit and adulterated products from third party sources on the Internet. Pure Encapsulations alerted us to similar occurrences with their products. Overheated products, expired products, labels removed, QR codes removed, and label tampering are all major issues. Read the memo here.

The Wall Street Journal recently reported on this issue as well.

We are not a third party vendor. We are an authorized vendor for Metagenics and Pure Encapsulations.

Have a happy, healthy day! Steve and Bonnie

Health Care Use, Life Satisfaction
Bonnie and Steve: When it comes to health care, the data is painfully obvious...less is better.

Life satisfaction is increasingly being recognized as an important determinant of overall health. Poor satisfaction in life was a strong predictor of higher healthcare use with the lowest level of life satisfaction associated with three times higher odds of being in the highest cost category compared with those who are satisfied with their life, according to a study in the August issue of American Journal of Preventive Medicine.

Interestingly, low life satisfaction was consistent regardless of socioeconomic level. Higher healthcare is usually associated with complex chronic conditions.

Increased life distress has physiologic impacts that have broad health effects that contribute to disease, including lack of movement and exercise. Alternatively, physical activity is directly correlated with higher levels of happiness. Therefore, people that are happier engage in healthier behaviors.

Those that are dissatisfied with life may also be affected by depression. Well-being relates more to the amount of time one feels positive than with the intensity of positive feeling and, accordingly, the inverse correlation between life satisfaction and depression seems to go from moderate to strong. Depression affects quality of life and increases health service utilization.

Continuing to study the impact of life satisfaction and its connection to the overuse of healthcare is critical. We are the poster child case. The United States spends the most in the developed world on health care, but gets the worst results.

As we struggle to determine how to best manage future healthcare costs and improve population health, adhering to a less is more approach, and focusing more resources on prevention, should be the highest priority.
