NCI Well Connect Mid-Week Brief
August 8, 2018
Dear Steve,

DID YOU KNOW that we've waited a long time for a study to reveal that gluten can be a hidden ingredient in many medications. The study, entitled "Addressing Barriers for Patients with Celiac Disease When Assessing for Gluten in Medications," was published this month in Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The authors acknowledged the existence of gluten in medications, which often is not labeled, and that it is a cause for concern. It's about time!

If you have a gluten issue, whether intolerance or disease, you have to make sure you let your pharmacist know this. Don't rely on your doc to tell them!

If you need a list of cross-reacting foods to remove from your diet for the next four to eight weeks, as well as foods to replace them, our Conquering Allergy and Intolerance Action Plan has it covered. Free by email to NCI Well Connect members or can be ordered separately at our website.

Have a happy, healthy day! Steve and Bonnie
New Rx for All Cancer Patients
Bonnie and Steve: Exercise should now be a part of the standard of care in treating all patients with cancer. That is the position of the Clinical Oncology Society of Australia, published in the Medical Journal of Australia.

Why are we writing about this if it is the guideline of Australia? We think it is important to note that now, both Australia and the UK prescribe exercise as a part of standard cancer care because the data are very strong that exercise can help manage the toxicities and adverse effects of cancer therapy, be that fatigue or depression or many other problems.

Guess who does not have an exercise guideline yet? Yep, the United States.

Oncologists and other cancer care professionals should discuss exercise as an adjunct treatment with patients, prescribe it routinely, and refer patients to exercise specialists.

The Australian guidance calls for patients with cancer to perform the following:
  • At least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic exercise (i.e., walking, jogging, cycling, swimming) each week;
  • Two to three resistance exercise (i.e., lifting weights) sessions each week involving moderate- to vigorous-intensity exercises targeting the major muscle groups;
  • Exercise should be tailored to the individual's abilities, treatment-related adverse effects, anticipated disease trajectory, and health status.
Gerolsteiner Alternative
Bonnie and Steve: We know that you love Gerolsteiner sparkling water. All of our family and staff love it too! However, there are some that do not care for Gerolsteiner, or find it cumbersome to purchase glass bottles.

We are delighted that Pure Encapsulations has launched Mineral2O, which is basically Gerolsteiner in "powder" form. Just add a tiny scoop to 8 oz. of water and that's it!

Here are some of the reasons why Mineral2O is so ideal:
  • It's portable. Much easier to bring with on vacations or to the gym. You can put a scoop into your water bottle and have an instant electrolyte water/mineral supplement.
  • The downside of a reverse osmosis filter is it removes all minerals. Also, if you live in a location with soft water, there are few minerals. Mineral2O can replace many of these for you.
  • Provides every essential electrolyte, but is very low in sodium. We get so much more sodium in our diets than all other electrolytes. You can add sea salt to your water if you need more sodium.
  • Perfect for athletes and those who exercise vigorously for before and after workouts/athletic events.
  • Better tolerated for those with absorption issues or chronic diarrhea.
  • When you have stomach flu or an intestinal virus that causes acute diarrhea, Mineral2O with a well tolerated sugar, such as maple syrup, could be awonderful alternative to the dehydration formulas that are loaded with corn and preservatives.
  • You could reduce your calcium and magnesium supplement intake. Consult with your health professional before doing so.
  • It's alkalizing. Along with calcium, magnesium, and chloride, Mineral2O contains 72 trace minerals, most of which are alkalizing.
Please direct any product questions by email to Steve.
