NCI Well Connect: September 12, 2016
Dear Steve,

DID YOU KNOW that Starbucks rolled out a new, non-caloric, stevia sweetener nationwide? Guess what? It stinks.

It contains erythritol, which claims to be natural, but is not. It also contains fructose, which is a CALORIC sugar. Starbucks can probably call it non-caloric because the fructose is in such a small amount.

The other three ingredients, chicory root fiber, stevia leaf extract, and monk fruit extract are fine, but the stevia comes from China.

Whole Earth, who is providing the sweetener to Starbucks, also partnered with PepsiCo to make PureVia. Along with Truvia, these two sweeteners were responsible for moving wonderful stevia products, such as Sweet Leaf, off many market shelves.

Have a happy, healthy day. Steve and Bonnie

Vitamin D Dazzles
Bonnie and Steve: It has been a while since we have done a vitamin D update. It has not been for a lack of positive data. Three recent studies implored us to share an update with you.

Asthma
A surprising study, that made national headlines last week, stated that taking vitamin D supplements alongside asthma medication helps cut the risk of severe asthma attacks. Astoundingly, this came from Cochrane Review, who never put a stamp of approval on anything!

Taking vitamin D supplements also reduced the number of asthma attacks needing steroid treatment. There was no increase in side effects with the vitamin D doses given.

Dry Eye
A study from last week's International Journal of Rheumatic Diseases found that premenopausal women with vitamin D deficiency have a higher incidence of dry eye syndrome.

When suggesting how vitamin D deficiency has a strong association with dry eye, the researchers pointed to vitamin D's strong critical role that induces cathelicidin, an antimicrobial peptide produced by epithelial cells in the corneal and conjunctiva of the eye).

Vitamin D also plays a role in wound healing, enhancing tear film parameters, and reduces ocular surface inflammation. They conclude that patients should be evaluated for dry eye with vitamin D deficiency, since vitamin D plays a protective role.

Overweight/Obesity
The association between overweight/obesity and lower serum vitamin D levels may be due to increased fatty tissue. Vitamin D status improves with a combination of vitamin D supplementation and fat mass reduction.

The researchers in the September issue of American Journal of Clinical Nutrition suggest that persons carrying extra fatty tissue track their vitamin D level and supplement with vitamin D3 accordingly.

Conclusion
Besides testing your blood level of vitamin D, it is the important to know how you transfer vitamin D genetically from the sun, food, and supplements into the vitamin D hormone. Many clients who have done our Pure Genomics screening have exhibited genetic deficiencies, which alters how they use vitamin D3.

Far Infrared Sauna Therapy
It is always the right time to experience Far Infrared Sauna Therapy. Traditional saunas emit direct heat. Far Infrared uses light to create heat. Far infrared run at much milder temperatures, but travels much deeper into the body, which is why you sweat more vigorously. Sweating is the body's safe and natural way to heal and detoxify.

Aside from the fact that you are taking one hour out of your busy lives to relax, Far Infrared Therapy offers numerous therapeutic benefits, most importantly enhanced detoxification. Many clients use it to relieve painful joints, rev up metabolism, and remove buildup of heavy metals.

Sweat samples reveal traces of a number of toxins, including mercury, lead, cadmium, arsenic, and some hormone-disrupting chemicals. Far Infrared has shown to draw out 15 to 20% more heavy metals, sulfuric acid, ammonia, uric-acid, and fat-soluble toxins than traditional saunas.

A recent study in JAMA Internal Medicine found that increased frequency of sauna bathing reduced the risk of sudden cardiac death, coronary heart disease, cardiovascular disease, and all-cause mortality.
