NCI Well Connect Mid-Week Brief
September 13, 2017
Dear Steve,

DID YOU KNOW that there is a new food trend that you need to be aware of? It is called Blue Majik and is an Instagram "sensation". It is a proprietary supplement blend with spirulina as the main ingredient. You must be extremely careful when taking spirulina, a cyanobacteria, because if it is not harvested properly, it could be very toxic. Our general recommendation is to avoid this product altogether.

DID YOU KNOW that we raised $1334.73 from our Labor Day sale for the American Red Cross to help those who were affected by Hurricane Harvey? Your incredible generosity is amazing and we thank you. Unfortunately, we had to earmark some of the funds to those hit by Hurricane Irma as well!

Have a happy, healthy day! Steve and Bonnie
Smart Advice, Smart Food, Dumb Meds
Bonnie and Steve: Smart Advice
According to a study in the August issue of BMC Medicine, a one-to-one lifestyle-modification program delivered quarterly by licensed health professionals can significantly reduce the incidence of cardiometabolic disease predictors in young people at risk for type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease, particularly when they're under the age of 18.

The risk was 17% lower when participants 5 to 40 years of age received a pragmatic, individualized lifestyle-modification program.

As you know, the impact of learning how to eat better, exercise more, manage stress, and achieve and maintain a healthy weight can be dramatic, especially to impressionable young minds. It's certainly much cheaper to do it this way than when they have a disease.

Smart Food
A new study from NeuroImage, done by researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, found that monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs), such olive oil, nuts, and avocados, are linked to general intelligence, and that this relationship is driven by the correlation between the fatty acids and the organization of the brain's attention network.

General intelligence was associated with the brain's dorsal attention network, which plays a central role in attention-demanding tasks and everyday problem solving. Those with higher levels of MUFAs in their blood had greater small-world propensity in their dorsal attention network.

Smart Food and Beverage, Dumb Meds
A Mediterranean-style eating style along with alkaline mineral water showed significantly greater improvement for laryngopharyngeal reflux symptoms than treatment with proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs), according to a study published last week in JAMA Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery.

Amelioration of reflux symptoms may be obtained without PPI use? Where have we heard this before (wink wink)?

Not only do reflux symptoms subside, other benefits of this approach include decreased risk for and improved control of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, stroke, and cancer, and avoiding the risks of drug interaction or complication.

The researchers suggest that up to 80% of people should not receive a PPI prescriptions because of the hellacious short and long-term side effects, such as abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea and constipation. Not to mention they have been associated with fundic gland polyps secondary to hypergastrinemia, low magnesium, low calcium, bone fractures, decreased absorption of vitamin B12, B6, folic acid, and greater susceptibility to contract pneumonia.

Pretty simple: a Mediterranean-style eating plan and alkaline sparkling mineral water such as Gerolsteiner brand beats reflux meds almost every time. For extra support, our Alka Support works very well for reflux symptoms!
