Dear Valued Subscriber,

Did you know that the dietary habits of baby boomers (people born between 1946 and 1964) exceeded that of the previous generation of middle-aged adults for total calories, total fat, sodium, and cholesterol? The intake of vitamin C, water, and vegetables was less than that of the previous generation, and the dietary intake of fruit and fiber was unchanged.

The Southern Medical Journal study confirms these findings are indicative of a diet that may contribute to increased rates of chronic disease among individuals in this age group.

Diet and Lifestyle Counseling Reduces Heart Risk
stateofthebonnieThe review performed by investigators from the Kaiser Permanente Research Affiliates Evidence-based Practice Center found that intensive interventions helped patients lose weight and reduce their lipid levels, blood pressure, and glucose levels.

Among the findings at 12 to 24 months:

  • LDL reduced by levels an average of 3.43 mg/dL
  • Systolic blood pressure lowered by an average of 2.03 mm Hg
  • Diastolic blood pressure lowered by an average of 1.38 mm Hg
  • Fasting glucose reduced by an average of 2.08 mg/dL

The findings had three major things in common:

  1. The counseling sessions were intensive, carried out on average over 12 months with several hours of contact.
  2. They were done by those with training.
  3. They included individualized care plans. The researchers said this was the most important aspect of the study.

Because the intervention is intensive, many primary care physicians are recommended to refer to specialists in their respected wellness fields.

Steve: The new United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) guide states that overweight and obese adults with one or more cardiovascular risk factors should undergo healthy lifestyle counseling.
