NCI Well Connect: September 19, 2016
Dear Steve,

DID YOU KNOW that two new studies further cement the need for optimal diets for school-age children?

According to a study in this month's Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, schoolchildren were randomly assigned to receive either capsules with omega-3 fatty acids, or identical capsules that contained palm oil.

After three months, the children's reading skills improved with the addition of fatty acids, compared with those who received the placebo. Children who had milder attention problems attained even greater improvements in several tests.

Another study from European Journal of Nutrition showed that children whose diet was rich in vegetables, fruit, berries, fish and unsaturated fats, and low in sugary products, did better in tests measuring reading skills than their peers with a poorer diet quality.

Low Cholesterol Creates More Inflammation
Bonnie and Steve: Statins have been in the news the last few weeks. A major Lancet review, written by dozens of researchers, lauded its benefits. The media failed to disclose the litany of contributors who have taken money from the statin manufacturers (more on this in our eNews Updates section).

Let's break down what high cholesterol is and why lowering it to levels never seen before is the wrong public health policy.

Cholesterol
When you release high amounts of cholesterol, this is your body's way of managing stressful/inflammatory insults to numerous organ systems, including the heart.

High cholesterol is produced if you have an injury, or you get an infection. It is also produced if you have chronic/acute issues.

When you essentially blunt the process of releasing cholesterol with statin medication, you may lower the amount of cholesterol, but that does not blunt the inflammation, which is the real danger. In fact, the inflammation increases the lower the your cholesterol is.

High cholesterol indicates you are fighting off a stressful insult at the moment, but if your inflammatory markers (such as CRP) are normal, cholesterol is not an issue, especially if you are already incorporating antiinflammatory paradigms, such as diet, lifestyle, and nutrients that work harmoniously with our bodies. This is only true way to manage optimal cholesterol levels and inflammation.

Conclusion
As we have said ad nauseam, when evaluating cardiac risk, you cannot just look at cholesterol. You must look at it like a pie. CRP and other inflammatory markers are 50% of the risk. The other 50% includes LDL, HDL, VLDL, LDL/HDL particle size, and Triglycerides.

When considering taking statins with their myriad side effects, think about the fact that you will only be addressing less than 20 percent of your cardiac risk, and potentially raising the risk of other inflammatory disorders. This is why risk of diabetes, memory loss, and muscle issues go up with statin medication: as cholesterol goes down, inflammatory disorders such as these go up.

Far Infrared Sauna Therapy
It is always the right time to experience Far Infrared Sauna Therapy. Traditional saunas emit direct heat. Far Infrared uses light to create heat. Far infrared run at much milder temperatures, but travels much deeper into the body, which is why you sweat more vigorously. Sweating is the body's safe and natural way to heal and detoxify.

Aside from the fact that you are taking one hour out of your busy lives to relax, Far Infrared Therapy offers numerous therapeutic benefits, most importantly enhanced detoxification. Many clients use it to relieve painful joints, rev up metabolism, and remove buildup of heavy metals.

Sweat samples reveal traces of a number of toxins, including mercury, lead, cadmium, arsenic, and some hormone-disrupting chemicals. Far Infrared has shown to draw out 15 to 20% more heavy metals, sulfuric acid, ammonia, uric-acid, and fat-soluble toxins than traditional saunas.

A recent study in JAMA Internal Medicine found that increased frequency of sauna bathing reduced the risk of sudden cardiac death, coronary heart disease, cardiovascular disease, and all-cause mortality.
