NCI Well Connect
September 24, 2018
Dear Steve,

DID YOU KNOW that sucralose (Splenda) decreases insulin sensitivity in healthy subjects, according to a study in the September issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition?

When you decrease the sensitivity of insulin, the risk for blood sugar disorders goes up significantly. Wasn't sucralose invented to do the opposite?

Have a happy, healthy day! Steve and Bonnie

Vitamin D Update

Bonnie and Steve: As we enter into fall, it is always prudent to take note of your vitamin D intake. If you titer down your dosage during the spring and summer, October is a good time to titer the dosage back up to fall and winter levels.

As you may know, we like to periodically cite vitamin D research updates. This is especially important now, as vitamin D and testing of 25(OH)D levels have been taking a beating in the media over the last year. We like to stick with the research, which is as copious on vitamin D as just about any nutrient we recommend.

A study in the August issue of British Journal of Nutrition stated that genetic mutations of the vitamin D pathways were associated with increased susceptibility to upper respiratory infections in children and adults.

Moreover, a study in the August issue of Nutrients stated that postmenopausal women with genetic mutations of the vitamin D pathways were much more likely to exhibit vitamin D deficiency.

Finally, a study from the July issue of Journal of the Endocrine Society purported that compared with the control group, vitamin D3 supplementation significantly reduced HbA1c level by, fasting plasma glucose level in prediabetics.

The best time to test your vitamin D3 levels is right now, when levels should be at their highest, and at the beginning of spring, where levels are often at their lowest.
