3 Allies for Inflammation: Diet, Exercise, and?
Bonnie and Steve: Optimal dietary habits reduce inflammatory stressors. Exercise is a proven anti-inflammatory. Yet, even when we do these perfectly, our modern lifestyle still creates unwanted stress and hence, inflammation.

This is why it is critical to have a third "go-to" technique, stress management, to practice on a daily basis.

If we allow unfettered stress to run wild, it can actually neutralize some of the good dietary habits adhere to.

A study from last week's Molecular Psychiatry found that women who had breakfast with healthy, unsaturated fat, received little benefit from it during days of extreme stress.

Simply, allowing stress to overtake you usurps the anti-inflammatory benefits of optimal dietary habits.

That said, the women in the study had much less inflammation when compared with women who ate a breakfast rich in starchy grains and large amounts of saturated fat.

Optimal diet and daily exercise are top priorities. But don't let stress blunt your wonderful lifestyle habits. Here are several ways to manage stress if you are not doing so already:

Breathe - simply take 4 or 5 breaks per day to do some deep breathing exercises where you just focus on your breathing and nothing else.

Visualization - upon waking and before bed, visualize stressful situations and how you will deal with them successfully. The more comfortable you are with stressful situations, the less toll it will take on your mind and body.

Meditation - this is the ultimate goal. Some of us need to work up to meditation, but 20 minutes twice daily minimum is the goal. There are many different meditation techniques. Play around with several of them until you find the one that works for you.
