Dear Valued Subscriber,

Did you know that this statement recently appeared in JAMA? "Long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, which are present in cold-water fish such as herring or salmon and are commercially available in capsules (over the counter and by prescription), can decrease fasting triglyceride concentrations 20-50% by reducing hepatic triglyceride production and increasing triglyceride clearance. With long-term intake, they may increase HDL-C."

Triglycerides are finally receiving their due for heart and diabetes prevention. Fish oil is an amazing therapy for lowering high triglycerides.

Have a happy, healthy week. Bonnie and Steve Minsky

Salt Is Not The Enemy
The war on sodium has gotten out of hand. Instead of the current public health approach that calls for a severe reduction in sodium, it might be wiser to recommend either high-quality diets rich in potassium or add potassium to food.

When you reduce your salt intake, you increase risk factors that could theoretically eliminate the reduced risk for cardiovascular disease predicted from lowering your blood pressure. For many parts of the world, reducing salt also removes an essential way of getting iodine. Processed (table) salt is not ideal because it is processed with bleach, but much of the world does not have access to natural unprocessed salt.

We just need to balance our sodium and potassium intake. This is just one of a long list of nutrient pairs that need to be balanced. Calcium and magnesium need to be balanced. Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids need to be balanced.

Have you ever tasted potassium salt? It tastes a lot like table salt. It may take a little while for the taste buds to acclimate, but you would not have to sacrifice the salty taste of your food while easily bringing sodium/potassium levels into balance.

Here is a list of potassium-rich foods. This can be accessed by Well Connect subscribers.
