DID YOU KNOW that vitamin B12 was found to slow the functional decline of early-stage ALS? While this is an ultra-high dosage that should never be taken unless prescribed by a physician, it is a wildly exciting study from JAMA Neurology, if not solely for the fact that it was well tolerated and safe. Not to be outdone, four other studies on B-vitamins were published recently. Vitamin B12 was found to support chronic stress and depression, according to Frontiers in Nutrition. Nutrition Reviews suggests B-complex supplementation could improve many symptoms and signs of diabetic peripheral neuropathy. Researchers from Journal of Hepatology found that vitamin B12 and folic acid have a role in preventing or delaying disease progression of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis. A high intake of vitamin B12 was linked to lower risk of developing Parkinson's disease, as presented at the International Congress of Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorders 2022.

8th Wonder of the Heart World
Steve: Researchers in Journal of the American Heart Association have recommended sleep as an eighth metric, in relation to cardiovascular disease risk of the American Heart Association's original Life's Simple 7 metrics. Wow, what a revelation, huh? While I jest, it is nice to see this addition. Moreover, they evaluated overall sleep health with multiple dimensions (i.e. sleep duration, efficiency, and regularity, daytime sleepiness, and sleep disorders) as predictive of future CVD. For the sleep duration metric, sleeping 7 hours or more but less than 9 hours each night was considered indicative of ideal sleep health. We think between 6 and 8 is ideal for adults and between 7 and 10 in teens and children. The authors said, "Our results demonstrate that sleep is an integral component of CVH. Our results highlight the importance of embracing a holistic vision of sleep health that includes sleep behaviors and highly prevalent, mild sleep problems rather than strictly focusing on sleep disorders when assessing an individual's cardiovascular risk." We work with clients frequently regarding natural ways to improve their sleep habits. For self-help, we have our Sleep Well Action Plan.
