OUR OPINION OF THE J&J VACCINE
Steve and Bonnie: Last Friday, U.S. regulators recommended the Johnson and Johnson (J&J) COVID-19 vaccine for emergency approval. The one shot vaccine consists of a replication-incompetent recombinant adenovirus type 26 (Ad26) based upon a platform that has already been studied as vaccines for Ebola, Zika, filovirus, HIV, HPV, malaria, and respiratory syncytial virus. J&J is not an mRNA vaccine. From an ingredient perspective, while no heavy metal adjuvants such as aluminum or mercury exists, we are more concerned about the configuration of J&J's vaccine than either the Pfizer or Moderna. There are four corn-derived ingredients including ethanol (grain alcohol). There are several acid compounds including hydrochloric acid (stomach acid). Finally, polysorbate 80 is a preservative that is highly reactive in sensitive individuals. The safety data was very similar to that of Pfizer and Moderna vaccines. The efficacy of the J&J vaccine is significantly less than the two dose Pfizer and Moderna. Mounting research indicates that one shot of Pfizer or Moderna may be just as, or more efficacious than, one J&J shot. In conclusion, we much prefer either one or two doses of Pfizer or Moderna to the J&J.
